NEW YORK - 2002. A man returns home after a late night out. Since 1807, the Staten Island Ferry transports residents of Staten Island to and from Manhattan. On a typical weekday the ferry makes one hundred and four daily trips across the New York Harbor. The journey takes twenty-five minutes, and covers five miles from the St. George Ferry Terminal in Manhattan to the South Ferry Terminal. Approximately seventy thousand passengers make the voyage each weekday, and that means over twenty million people ride the Staten Island Ferry every year. (Photo by Landon Nordeman).
